Farewell & Thank You to Mecklenburg Gardens, Hello to Wiedemann Brewing 9/30/2023

From our Vice President, Ryan Preston:

On behalf of the Board, I am sending out this message with sadness, and at the same time, a sense of excitement for our Club’s next chapter. After many years of being Handlmaier Mustard Club’s home, John Harten has recently announced the sale of Mecklenburg Gardens.

We will always look back, fondly, at the countless memories there over the years, and sincerely appreciate all the efforts that they made to make our meetings and special events the overwhelming success that they turned out to be. The relationships that were made over the past 16 years or so are what make Mecks so special. We are so very grateful to John, along with the past and present kitchen staff and bartenders. They are in no small part responsible for the longevity that our little club has enjoyed for so long. Together, they made Mecks somewhere to look forward to coming each and every month. We will miss all the wonderful people, and my hope is that they decide to join us as fellow Mustard Club members and stand among us.

Please join us in wishing John Harten health and happiness in his retirement, and best of luck to his staff in their future endeavors.

With this in mind, we have been working hard to quickly find a new home in time for the October meeting. It was challenging with such a short turnaround time, due to the size of the club and unique requirements for food as well as special events. We believe you will love where we land!

Beginning October 14, 2023, at the next Mustard Club meeting, we will gather at Wiedemann Brewing every month.

The Board selected them based on the enthusiasm and willingness that John & Betsy Newberry showed when we approached them with the opportunity to potentially host our club each month. As we went through all the things that it would require to make our meetings successful, it became a back-and-forth as to how they could help. It was encouraging being able to deal with the owners directly, much the same as was the case at Mecks.

MC will continue to have a buffet for purchase, split the pot, and all the special events like Medals Month, Boot Kicking, Beer Chugging, and others. Speaking of beer, Wiedemann features a wide selection of German-style beers brewed on premises.

Trust me when I say Wiedemann’s is a place that makes you want to hang out. Full of old brewery memorabilia, it has a big clubhouse feel and is surprisingly spacious. There is a covered deck with additional seating for roughly 50 people and a large area outside, next to parking lot, that could host our meetings in warmer months.

This said, it is very important that there will be an adjustment period as they get up to speed on things, and we ask for your patience and understanding.

Thank You.
